CPC30220 CERTIFICATE III IN CARPENTRY

CRICOS PROGRAM CODES: 119425J

This is a trade qualification for carpenters in residential and commercial workplaces. It includes setting out, manufacturing, constructing, assembling, installing and repairing products made using timber and non-timber materials. Completion of the general construction induction training program, specified in the Safe Work Australia model Code of Practice: Construction Work, is required by anyone carrying out construction work. Achievement of CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry meets this requirement. This qualification is suitable for an Australian apprenticeship pathway.

Delivery will occur over a 52 weeks (44 weeks training and 8 weeks holiday break) period.

  • Where students successfully apply for Credit Transfer (CT) and/or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), the course duration may be shortened accordingly and adjustments will be made to any CoE issued.

St Peter Institute has the following entry requirements:

International students must:

  • be at least 18 years of age and have completed Year 11 or equivalent.
  • participate in a course entry interview to determine suitability for the course and student needs. The course entry interview will also assess language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) and whether students can use digital technologies.
  • have an IELTS* score of 6.0 (test results must be no more than 2 years old).
  • hold CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry (white card).

English language competence can also be demonstrated through documented evidence of any of the following:

  • have completed a Certificate IV or above in Australia within the last 2 years
  • educated for 5 years in an English-speaking country.

*Note that other English language tests such as PTE and TOEFL can be accepted, see full list available here. Students are required to provide their results so that it can be confirmed they are equivalent to IELTS 6.0

Students with English Language Tests that are equivalent to IELTS 5.0 or above can also be eligible for entry into this course by participating in an ELICOS course (English classes) with SPI prior to entry into this course. Please contact SPI for more information.

St Peter Institute will assist students in making arrangements to obtain the CPCWHS1001 unit.

Assessments will be conducted face to face which could include:

  • Direct observation of practical tasks in the training workshop, where students demonstrate carpentry skills using industry tools and equipment.
  • Practical projects and construction activities, such as measuring, cutting, assembling, and installing building components.
  • Written assessments, including short answer questions, worksheets, or knowledge tests to confirm understanding of construction principles and workplace safety requirements.
  • Workplace or simulated workplace tasks that reflect real construction site activities.
  • Trainer questioning and discussions to confirm understanding of tasks, processes, and safety requirements.

A combination of these assessment methods ensures students are able to demonstrate both practical competency and theoretical knowledge required for the carpentry industry.

 

Job roles and titles vary across different industry sectors. Possible job titles relevant to this qualification include:

  • Carpenter – Commercial
  • Carpenter – Formwork
  • Carpenter – Residential
  • Face to face delivery at our Melbourne Campus and practical workshop sessions at 235 Ingles Street, Port Melbourne VIC 3207 and 14/65 Mark St, North Melbourne VIC 3051.
  • 20 hours per week of classroom and workshop based training and assessment.
  • 5 hours of self study including structured self-directed learning and completing assessment work started in class.
  • Up to one hour per week of individual support if required.

Completion of this qualification may support pathways towards trade recognition or licensing requirements in the building and construction industry, subject to state or territory regulations.

EQUIPMENT +

Students enrolled in CPC30220 – Certificate III in Carpentry are required to use appropriate equipment, tools and personal protective equipment during training, assessment and workshop sessions.

Students are required to have suitable equipment, tools and personal protective equipment for workshop and practical training activities.

The estimated cost for the SPI Trades Academy carpentry equipment kit is approximately $140. This estimate may change depending on supplier pricing and availability.

Carpentry PPE and equipment
Please note: Students must also ensure they have any additional PPE required for workshop attendance, including industrial safety shoes / steel-cap boots and a hard hat, unless otherwise advised by SPI Trades Academy. These items may need to be sourced independently by the student.

Students must have the required equipment and PPE before attending workshop sessions. Students without required safety gear may not be permitted to enter the workshop or participate in practical activities.

Carpentry workshop equipment

Equipment provided by the Institute is used for supervised training and assessment activities. All equipment is maintained in accordance with workplace health and safety (WHS) requirements.
